I don’t have power! What can I do about my hot tub?

Are you in the dark after the worst power outage in Kentucky history?  If you are, you are not alone!  Thousands of people are without power, and are unsure of when their power is going to be restored.  We are already on day five, and could go as much as a week or two until everything is back up and running.  So, what do you do about your hot tub while you are without power?  We are answering lots of questions over the phone in our stores, so I thought I would put the info on our blog!

 Some of the info we have been sharing with our customers:

-Turn the breaker or power off to the spa.  This way, when the power comes back on, it won’t surge and cause more damage to the spa or electronics.
- DON’T OPEN THE COVER – Treat your hot tub like a refrigerator.  Your cover and the spa’s insulation should keep much of the heat in.  Don’t keep opening it to check the water temperature as this will only make it cool off faster.  (We are seeing temperatures in a well-insulated spa like Sundance drop only 5-9 degrees per day.  So, if your spa was 102 degrees when you lost power, and is well insulated, it would still be at around 57-77 degrees in about 5 days.)
- Wrap the hot tub with plastic or a tarp to keep air out.  Tie the tarp or plastic with a rope to keep it secured.  This will help in windy conditions to keep additional cold air from getting into the tub through the cover or cabinet.
- After your power has been restored, immediately turn the spa back on.  Make sure pumps are working properly and water is circulating.  If the pumps don’t sound normal or if water is not circulating, turn the spa off immediately as pipes may have frozen and water might not be moving.  If you can see damage to the pipes or pumps, or if your spa is not running normally, call the Pools Plus Service Department at 270-769-0585.   Our service techs can diagnose and repair the problem so your hot tub is up and running as soon as possible!
